News and Views: 2023–4 Season – Cup Round 1

With 16 teams in the League this season, all teams were involved in Round 1 of the Cup. The questions were set by an external setter. Teams were asked to provide question masters where possible, and with the help of one or two volunteers all matches appear to have been catered for!

Notes

There were some very high scores, although not as high as in last season's Quarter–Finals, when the Poachers scored 134 and the aggregate score of 230 in their game against the Park Timers was matched by the one between the Nags Head 'B' (118) and the Dolphin (112).

Four of the games were won by the teams that went first (taking the odd–numbered questions) and four by those going second.

Sixty–one questions (just over half) were answered in all eight games, and every question was answered correctly in at least two. Three questions were answered in only two games: numbers 17 (the blue plaque in Mornington Crescent tube station), 40 (the language that gave us the word 'yoga'), and 43 (the quotation about power corrupting). Next hardest were numbers 117 (the Caterpillar Club) and 120 (Bix Beiderbecke's real first names), each of which was answered in only three of the eight games.

This would appear to suggest that the teams going first fielded three of the hardest questions (numbers 17, 43 and 117), while those going second got two (40 and 120).
