News and Views: 2023–4 Season, Week 16 – 26 March 2024

Results and Tables

The Poachers returned to the top of the A League table by winning the game they had in hand over the Nags Head 'B' (against the Dolphin). These two play each other next week; if the Poachers win they will be Champions. If the Nags win it will be down to the final games, when the Poachers play the Dolphin Hammers and the Nags play the Dolphin.

At the other end of the table, Harrington Academicals can now finish no higher than seventh and will return to the B League next season (unless structural changes dictate otherwise). If the Nags Head win either of their two remaining games, the Accies will be joined by the Waters Green Weavers, who have only one game left; if they lose both (one of which is against the Weavers) it'll be the Nags.

Joining the A League next season (on the same assumption as above) will be the Waters Green Nags (assured of the B League title even before their twelfth win of the season this week) and one of either the Park Taverners, Bate Hallers or Sutton Club. The Hallers, having played the Nags this week, play their two rival teams in their last two games, so if they win both games they will be runners-up.

Individual

There was only one personal best: congratulations to John Poyser, whose 42 was the best score in the B League and also the best in either League in Seat 5. Six people failed to improve on their lowest scores of the season; one of them was A League individual leader Alan Hodgson.

Top scorer this week was Ashton Davies with 48. Peter McBride and Greg Spiller each scored 45, and Alice Walker equalled John Poyser's 42.

This put Alice nine points (three questions) ahead of Mark Watson, who didn't play this week, in the A League Individual table – and only two questions behind the leader. Ashton has only played nine games, and although he's currently 90 points off the lead, if he scores at his customary rate he must have a good chance of finishing at least in the top three.

Paul Prior and Ian Musgrave remain tied at the top of the B League table, and John Poyser – despite his excellent score this week – can no longer catch them. Last week we said that Graham Wallace still had an outside chance, but sadly for Graham I think that chance has now gone.

Questions

Specialist rounds: Food & Drink, Sweet FA (words beginning with fa–), and Oscar–winning songs.

In summary we could repeat what we said about last week's questions: according to the spreadsheet, this week's were somewhat on the hard side, the balance was poor in both sets but overall it was very good because the apparent biases worked against each other. The upshot was that the Entertainment marks were not good.

Not many contributions to the Forum, which may (or may not) mean that when it came down to it, people couldn't remember what it was they didn't like about the questions.

The spreadsheet found this week's questions to be very similar to last week's: somewhat on the difficult side, with one team getting much easier questions in the first half of the quiz and their opponents getting easier questions in the second half. Last week it was the teams that went first in each half that tended to do better; this week it was the teams that went second.

Also as last week, the Entertainment marks were very much on the low side. Last week's questions are currently 23rd and 25th (out of 32); this week's are 24th and 27th.

In the Specialist questions, the teams that went second scored 99% of their average marks, while those that went first scored only 75%. In the General Knowledge, the teams that went second scored 110% and those that went first scored only 92%.

Overall, the balance (according to the spreadsheet) was excellent: the teams on both sides scored 95% of their average marks. This may be scant consolation to the Pack Horse Bowling Club, as the spreadsheet marks each set separately. We will think about changing this next season, now that there is only one team setting the questions each week.
