The questions were well up to the standard that we've come to expect from the Ox–fford, and there were excellent scores all round. Of the nine games, three were won by teams going "first first" and six by the teams going the other way.
The teams that won by going "first first" were the Ox–fford 'C', Weaver and Sutton Mutton.
Wk | Team | Difficulty | Balance | Ent'mnt | Total | Last Year | ||
1 | 1 | Spec | Ox–fford | 10.00 | 6.63 | 7.22 | 23.58 | 24.69 |
2 | 1 | GK | Ox–fford | 8.23 | 4.65 | 6.50 | 19.37 | 17.22 |
The Ox–fford's Specialist questions scored full marks for Difficulty; this means that they were easier than any we had last season. The balance was better than average, with a slight bias towards the teams that went first first.
The General Knowledge questions were also significantly easier than average. The balance was slightly worse than average, with a bias towards the teams that went first (i.e. second in the Specialist questions).
Because the bias favoured different teams in each half, the balance was very good overall, with a very slight bias (116 to 112, relative difficulty 1.04) in favour of the teams that went second in the Specialist questions.
In total, the Specialist questions scored slightly lower than the Ox–fford's Specialist questions from last season (which ended up winning the trophy). This was mainly due to a lower score for Balance. For the General Knowledge questions the Ox–fford scored significantly better than for last year's set, which finished comfortably in mid–table.
Hats off to Alasdair Reid of the Nags Head, whose 54 was the highest individual score of the week.
The Nags went "first second"; Alasdair got the second question in each Specialist round and the first in each General Knowledge round (1, 9, 17, etc.). The only ones he got wrong were California's official state animal and the fact that Bamako is the capital of Mali.
Elsewhere in the B League there was excitement at the Waters Green Tavern, where the Lemmings beat the Royal Oak by just one point.
Top team score of the week was 186 by the Dolphin Dragons, with top-ten individual contributions from Liz Horrocks, Robin Morrell and Chris Wall.
In the C League, the Chester Road Tavern were unlucky to lose to the Sutton Mutton despite three top-ten individual contributions from Jim Moores, Mitch Moores and Tony Moores. The Mutton themselves made the highest team score in the C League, which means they top the table after Week 1.
The draw has now been made for Round 1 of the Cup which will be played on 24 October 2017.
The 24 teams in the League are all playing and there are no additional teams this year.
As we have 24 teams, the format will be that in the first round there will be eight games between 16 teams, leaving eight teams to ask the questions. Two of these eight teams will set the questions, with the other six teams having a "bye".
The eight winners of the games in Round 1 will go forward to the next round of the Cup; the eight losers will go into the Plate.
The eight teams who are not playing in Round 1 will join the eight winners to make the last 16 for the Cup.
All will be explained for Round 2 etc as we go through the season, but in essence, the eight losing teams in Round 1 of the Cup will be the Plate Quarter Finalists.
So, the details for Round 1 are as follows:
Questions for the night will be set by the Ox–fford 'C' and the Park Timers, who will also supply two Question Masters each to cover the games to be played.
The six teams with "byes" are:
Harrington Academicals | Waters Green Lemmings | Nags Head |
Chester Road Tavern | British Flag | Ox–fford |
Each of these six teams will provide one Question Master, to complete the eight games.
The mathematically inclined amongst you will see that this leaves us with a surplus of Question Masters – better too many than not enough, as history shows us!
Teams should please decide beforehand who is going so that no one turns up unnecessarily and we don't have to call anyone on the night.
The games are:
Sutton Mutton | Royal Oak |
Prince of Wales | Weaver |
Harrington 'B' | Park Taverners |
Robin Hood | Dolphin Dragons |
Wharfies | Plough Horntails |
Dolphin | Pack Horse Bowling Club |
Waters Green Rams | Cock Inn |
Church House Bollington | Sutton Club |
These games will be played on 24 October 2017.
Questions for Round 2 will be set by two of the losing teams from the above games. A draw will be made after the above games have been played.
