Congratulations to the Waters Green Nags, who are now (finally) assured of the B League title after winning their game against the Chester Road Tavern. They are now seven points clear of their nearest rivals, and with no teams having more than three games left to play that is an unassailable lead.
The Bate Hallers moved into second place this week, overtaking the Park Taverners by winning their game in hand. They still have to play each of the other three Top Four teams, so they have their work cut out to secure the second 'promotion' place; but the Taverners also have to play the Sutton Club (currently 4th), so second place is still very much up for grabs.
In the A League, the top two both won to open up a six–point gap (with three games to play). The Dolphin, currently in third place, can only catch them if the Nags Head 'B' and the Poachers lose all of their remaining games; but they still have to play both, so there must still be hope!
The Dolphin Hammers are now assured of finishing outside the A League's bottom two, leaving the Nags Head, Waters Green Weavers and Harrington Academicals as the only teams still looking over their shoulders.
And finally ... congratulations also to the Pack Horse Bowling Club, who recorded their first win of the season in a very close game against the Park Timers.
Top scorer this week was Ian Grieve with 54. According to our records this is Ian's highest ever score; his previous best was 48, which he achieved twice last season – in Weeks 12 and 14.
Forty–eight was the next highest score this week, for Ashton Davies and Dave Partington. There were just two other scores over 40: 45 for Greg Spiller, and 42 for Mark Watson. The highest score in the B League was 33, for Ian Musgrave and Malcolm Asquith.
Dave's 48 was also a personal best, but the only other one this week was 33 for Maddy Griffiths. Regular readers will know that Ian and Maddy play for the same team; and Dave was on the 'opposite' team (if you see what I mean), so neither side had a monopoly.
Eleven of the 48 participants failed to improve on their lowest scores of the season.
Mark Watson went equal second with Alice Walker in the A League table; they both trail Alan Hodgson by 15 points. Greg Spiller has a game in hand but probably has too much to do to catch Alan, while his fellow Poacher Ashton Davies needs to score at least 138 in his last three games (assuming he plays them all) to have any chance. In the B League, Ian Musgrave did just enough this week, in his 11th game, to join Paul Prior at the top of the table, but Paul has the advantage of a higher top score. The only other player who can't be entirely ruled out just yet is Graham Wallace ... but it would take three outstanding scores!
Specialist rounds: Down on the Farm (farms and farmers, both real and fictional); Three of a Kind (things that come in threes); Family Connections (questions or answers included the name of a family relationship). In the Arts & Entertainment round, each answer was the name of a city.
Both contributors to the Forum this week seem to have enjoyed the Dolphin's questions, although judging by the Entertainment marks there must have been some who didn't.
The questions do seem to have been a little on the difficult side, but the good news is that the overall balance was very good (according to the spreadsheet). Unfortunately for the setters, both sets seemed to be significantly biased towards the teams that went first; so although they cancelled each other out over the evening as a whole, in each half the questions scored poorly for Balance.

According to the spreadsheet's assessment of Difficulty and Balance, both of the Dolphin's question sets are in lower mid–table. The Entertainment marks are also on the low side (placing them 23rd and 24th out of 30), with the results that can be seen in the table above.
This might be seen as somewhat hard on the setters. The good news is that both teams seem to have had the easier questions in one half of the quiz, so (according to the spreadsheet) the overall balance was very good: the teams that started first scored on average 93% of their average marks, while those that started second did marginally better with 94%. And with the overall average rounding up to 94%, these were far from the most difficult questions we've had this season.
In terms of Balance, the figures for the two halves separately are less impressive. In the Specialists, the teams that went first scored 105% while those that went second managed only 87%, and in the General Knowledge the teams that went first (second in the Specialists) scored 97% while their opponents scored 86%.
