News and Views: 2021–2 Season – Week 2 – 30 November 2021

Results

The Park Taverners' game against the Dolphin Dragons, in the B League, was as close as you can get and still have a winner: the Taverners won by 148 points to 147.

It was a good night for the Nags Head, whose teams achieved the two highest scores of the night. The 'B' team scored 179 against the Queen Bs, and the 'original' Nags Head team scored only three less against the Plough Horntails. Best score in the C League was 150 by the Sutton Club, who played the King's Gambit.

Tables

With some teams having played only one game, there are two teams in each League that have played two and won two: the Queens, Dolphin, Nags Head, Park Taverners, Park Timers and Sutton Mutton.

Individual

Alan Hodgson was out on his own this week with 54. Mark Watson was next highest scorer with 48, and Haydn Thompson was third with 45. The two highest scorers in the B League were both on the same team: Paul Prior and Andy Johnson, with 42 each. Next best in the B League were Liz Horrocks and Jon Thompson, with 39 each. Top scorer in the C League was Emma Griggs with 33, followed by Tim Brewin with 30.

Specialist Rounds

Entertainment marks: A League6.00 B League7.00 C League6.00 Overall6.33 Last year5.89

This is a good mark for Entertainment; last season (2019-20) it would have been ranked 7th out of 34.

On average, teams going "first first" scored 109%of their average for the season
On average, teams going "second first" scored 101%of their average for the season
On average, the teams going "first first" did 8%better than their opponents

This suggests that the Specialist questions were easier than average, but with a modest bias towards the teams that went "first first". The Balance mark was the weakest of the three, but the overall score of 19.11 is perfectly respectable – last season it would have put these questions 13th out of 34.

General Knowledge Rounds

Entertainment marks: A League6.17 B League5.17 C League6.83 Overall 6.06 Last year4.62

Another good mark; last season it would have been 12th.

On average, teams going "first first" scored 111%of their average for the season
On average, teams going "second first" scored 104%of their average for the season
On average, the teams going "first first" did 7%better than their opponents

Very similar numbers to the Specialist questions. These too were easier than average but were somewhat let down by their Balance.

Overall

On average, teams going "first first" scored 110%of their average for the season
On average, teams going "second first" scored 102%of their average for the season
On average, the teams going "first first" did 7%better than their opponents

With both sets getting similar marks all round, it's no surprise that the overall story is the same: easier than average, but with a marked bias towards the teams that went "first first". Any team that went "second first" and lost by less than about ten points can feel hard done by (if the spreadsheet is correct); the only team that falls into this category is the Dolphin Dragons. And please remember that this is not an exact science!
