In 1848, Venetians challenged their then Austrian rulers and an Italian revolutionary state, named the Republic of San Marco, was formed. It lasted until 1849, when Austrian troops re–conquered it. During the siege the Austrians launched pilotless hot–air balloons carrying bombs, released by time–fuses, over the city.
