Chris Gayle – Universe Boss

Oh, please!

Chris Gayle nicknamed 'Universe Boss'? Yeah, right – but mainly by himself.

In March 2016, the BBC reported: 'Centurion Chris Gayle described himself as the "universe boss" after his stunning innings defeated England in their first game at the World Twenty20. The West Indies batsman struck 11 sixes on his way to scoring 100 from just 47 balls as England slumped to a six–wicket loss in Mumbai. "The world is watching, so the universe boss got to deliver and he did today," the 36–year–old left–hander said. "The Gayle force got the better of England today."'

The Daily Mail, in August 2017, was more forthright: "Self confidence is not something Gayle lacks ... When he calls himself the 'Universe Boss' – an upgrade from the more humble 'World Boss' – he does so with a twinkle in his eye, but no obvious sense of irony. 'I give the people what they want,' he said in a recent interview. 'There's no better person to do that than Chris Gayle himself.'"

Wikipedia, of course (also not known for its sense of irony), swallows the self–aggrandisement unquestioningly, listing 'Universe Boss' as one of Gayle's nicknames – after 'Henry', 'Gayle–Force' and 'Gayle Storm'. But it only mentions it in its summary block, and its citation is no longer live.

And in any case ... just because Wikipedia swallows it, doesn't mean that we have to. This is just a shameless piece of (like I said) self–aggrandisement, and should not (IMHO) be afforded the dignity of being referred to as a nickname.
