... Before she was a Virgin

This remark is commonly attributed to Groucho Marx, but the earliest documented usage is by the American pianist and composer of popular music, Oscar Levant. In his 1965 autobiography, The Memoirs of an Amnesiac, Levant wrote: "My last picture for Warners was Romance on the High Seas. It was Doris Day's first picture; that was before she became a virgin."

Oscar Levant was more famous for his mordant character and witticisms, on the radio and in films and television, than for his music. A friend of George Gershwin, he composed the music for more than twenty films between 1929 and 1948. He also wrote or co–wrote many popular songs, including Blame It on My Youth (1934), now considered a standard.

Oscar Levant died in 1972, aged 65.
