News and Views: 2018–19 Season – Week 6 – 20 November 2018

By Haydn Thompson, with input from Mark Watson.

Results

In both the A League and the C League, something had to give as the two unbeaten teams played each other. There is now just one unbeaten team in each league: the Dolphin, Harrington Academicals and the Robin Hood.

The Dolphin Dragons and the Cock Inn achieved their first victories of the season.

Tables

The Dolphin's victory over the Ox–fford means that they go top of the A League with a game in hand on the teams immediately below them. Rushton Diamonds went top of the B League on goal difference, having played one more game than the Harrington Academicals. Similarly in the C League, the Park Timers went top on goal difference over the Chester Road Tavern, who didn't play this week.

Individual

There were only eleven personal bests this week: five in the A League (including three for the Dolphin), four in the B League and two in the C League. Top score was 51, by Alan Hodgson and Haydn Thompson. In the B and C Leagues there were no scores above 36.

Almost half of the people who played this week (38 out of 80) registered their lowest (or equal lowest) scores of the season so far: 14 in the A League, and 12 each in the B and C Leagues.

Of the ten games this week (all eight A League teams playing), eight were won by the teams that went "first first". The two teams that won against these odds were the Royal Oak and Rushton Diamonds. Quite what the geographic influence on the results was, remains a mystery!

This week's questions did not score well at all. Their positions in the full table above are reversed in the Entertainment scores – the Harrington 'B''s General Knowledge questions sitting in tenth place and the Waters Green Lemmings' Specialist set in twelfth. According to the spreadsheet these were also two of the three most difficult sets of questions we've had so far this season. The Specialists scored well for Balance, but the General Knowledge seemed to show a marked bias in favour of the teams that went second ("first first"); both of these findings are reflected in the match scores.

Overall, teams that went "first first" scored 104% of their average scores, while those that went "second first" scored 93%. On an average team score of 137, this would mean a points difference of 15. Two of the games that went "with the bias" were within this margin.
