News and Views: 2018–19 Season – Week 2 – 16 October 2018

By Haydn Thompson, with input from Mark Watson.

Results

Congratulations to the Chester Road Tavern, who have won their first two games this season. Last season it took them until their penultimate game, in Week 16, to achieve their second victory!

The CRT were one of five teams that won by going "second first"; four games were won by those that went "first first".

There were no really close games this week, the smallest margin being the Ox–fford's twelve–point victory over the Waters Green Rams. One game in each league was won by more than thirty points.

Tables

Apart from the Chester Road Tavern, there are three other teams with two victories to their name: Harrington Academicals and British Flag in the B League, and Park Timers in the C League. The Accies currently lead the Flag by just five game points, while the Timers have a 21–point margin over the CRT.

In the A League, each of the six games so far this season has been won by a different team; or, to put it another way, no team has won more than one game but all except two have won one. This means that positions in the table are mainly down to "goal difference", which obviously favours the teams that have played two games (and won one of them).

Individual

There were three scores of 51: Alice Walker, Mark Watson and Bob Thompson. Highest score outside the A League was 48 by Jim Kennelly; there was also a 48 in the A League for Alan Hodgson. Jim is the only person to appear in the latest Top Tens having played only one game!

4 2 Spec Dolphin Dragons 6.14 6.54 6.22 18.89 20.42

The Dolphin Dragons' questions scored well all round, and both sets achieved marks that would have seen them comfortably in the final Top Ten last season. Overall they were slightly easier than average; the General Knowledge were very well balanced but the Specialists showed a slight bias in favour of the team that went second.

Readers of Nick's blog will have seen that the Specialist questions (or at least their share of them) did not suit the Lemmings. The spreadsheet bears this out, but (as stated above) detected only a slight bias overall. The Lemmings scored only 64% of their average Specialist total, while other teams going first scored anything between 98% (Plough Horntails) and 124% (Harrington Academicals). For the teams that went second, averages varied from 96% (Harrington 'B') to 123% (Robin Hood).

The fact that four teams won by going "first first" and five by going "second first" also suggests that there wasn't too much wrong with the balance. Sorry Lemmings!
