News and Views: 2017–18 Season – Week 14 – 27 February 2018

By Haydn Thompson, with input from Mark Watson.

Results

In a similar scenario to last week, all the teams that went "first first" in the A League won, and in the B League all the teams that went "second first" won. In the C League (where all eight teams played), the results were split – two of the four matches were won by the teams that went "first first", and two by those going "second first".

The closest game of the week was in the C League, where the Chester Road Tavern came within one point (or two, to be strictly accurate) of gaining only their second victory of the season, against the Park Timers. With one question remaining and the Timers two points behind, John Poyser was able to come up with the correct answer (Wolverine), to win the game for his team.

In the B League, the Waters Green Rams (unbeaten until last week) lost again – this time to the Royal Oak. This was the Oak's fifth consecutive win.

Tables

In the A League, the Ox–fford took advantage of the Ox–fford 'C''s week off to move to the top of the table for the first time since Week 6, with a victory over the Wharfies. The mid–table tussle between the Dolphin Dragons and the Weaver went to the latter, who moved above their hosts back into fourth place.

Similarly in the B League, where the Nags Head had a week off, the Royal Oak went to the top of the table for the first time this season with their victory over the Waters Green Rams. These three teams are now all on 16 points, but the Rams have a game in hand.

At the other end of the B League table, the first promotion or relegation issue of the season was confirmed with the Harrington 'B''s defeat at the hands of the Waters Green Lemmings. The Robin Hood are in need of a minor miracle if they are to avoid the same fate.

There was no movement at the top of the C League, but the Park Timers moved into fourth place above the Cock Inn and the Prince of Wales moved above the Pack Horse Bowling Club into sixth.

Individual

Top score this week was 48 by Mark Watson. The only other person to score over 40 was Alan Hodgson with 45. There were just three personal bests this week – one in each League: Mitch Moores (30), Dave Robinson (24), and Nick Peck (21). There were no fewer than 23 personal worsts (or equal worsts).

Some players have now played twelve games, which means that their lowest scores drop out of contention. The only effect that this had on any of the top places was in the C League, where Andy Ridgway dropped from second to fifth. Alice Walker had a similar fall in the A League, due to not playing (and having a marginally lower best score than Brian Bogie).

All questions were set by the Robin Hood, as all the C League teams were playing. The Robin scored marginally better for Entertainment than last year, but most teams found the questions rather difficult. In particular, the General Knowledge rounds were (according to the spreadsheet) the most difficult we've had yet this season.

The Specialist questions were only slightly harder than average, but there was a marked bias towards the teams that went second (107% to 89%). This was partially cancelled out by the General Knowledge questions, which also seemed to be biased towards the teams that went second (87% to 79%). Overall the balance was quite good, with only a slight bias towards the teams that went "second first" (90% to 88%). This is borne out by the fact that five of the ten matches were won by the teams that went "first first", with five going the other way.
