News and Views: 2017–18 Season – Week 12 – 6 February 2018

Results

In a table–topping clash in the B League, the Nags Head put paid to the Waters Green Rams' unbeaten record (the last in the League this season). Top scorers in the B League this week were the Royal Oak with 180 – beating the Harrington Academicals. Elsewhere the B League saw its second draw of the season, between the Waters Green Lemmings and the Robin Hood.

Overall top scorers were the Dolphin with 196. This was the highest score of the season, beating the 194 scored by the Ox–fford against the Dolphin in Week 6. Indeed it was the highest score for over two years – equalling the Ox-fford's score in Week 8 of the 2015–16 season. The highest team score last season was 188, by the Ox–fford 'C' in Week 18.

Also in the A League, the Weaver scored a narrow victory over the Church House Bollington and the Ox–fford beat the Dolphin Dragons in game that was only slightly less close.

In the C League, the Sutton Mutton suffered only their second defeat of the season, at the hands of the Park Taverners. There were also victories for the Pack Horse Bowling Club and the Cock Inn.

Tables

The Weaver's victory moved them off the bottom of the A League table and into fourth place, but they are just one point above the British Flag, who didn't play this week and replaced the Weaver in eighth place. The two bottom teams each have a game in hand over the three immediately above them, so with four or five games left there's still everything to play for.

There was a change at the top of the B League, where the Nags Head's victory over the Rams meant that they replaced them at the top of the table on goal difference – but the Rams have a game in hand.

Similarly in the C League, the Park Taverners' victory over the Sutton Mutton meant that they replaced them at the top of the table on goal difference – with both having played nine games.

Individual

After a few weeks of low scoring, there were no fewer than 35 personal bests this week – 11 in the A League, 10 in the B and 14 in the C – and only three personal worsts. Top scorers were Mark Watson and Andrew Wright, each with 51. Mark and Andrew were in the same place – second on the team that went first first.

The big news this week is that the Park Timers' General Knowledge questions have replaced the Ox-fford's specialist set at the top of the table. Thanks to a new feature of the spreadsheet (!), we can reveal that the average team score in the General Knowledge section of the quiz was 99. The previous highest average this year was 90 in Week 6 (when the setters were the Sutton Club); the average for the season so far is 82.

The Park Timers' questions scored well all round. They received the third highest Entertainment score of the season, and the highest for a General Knowledge set. The balance was good, with a slight bias in favour of the teams that went second (first in the Specialists); this equals the previous best score this season (for General Knowledge questions), by the Ox-fford 'C' in Week 5.

The Specialist questions, set by the Harrington 'B', also scored fairly well. They were only the sixth of the 24 sets so far this season to average more than six for Entertainment. The balance was not great; according to the spreadsheet there was a distinct bias (110% to 96%) in favour of the teams that went second. Overall they were slightly easier than average, with teams scoring on average 103% of their average scores.

The slight bias in the General Knowledge questions counteracted that in the Specialists, so overall there was a slight bias (114% to 111%) in favour of the teams that went second in the Specialist questions. This is borne out by the fact that five of the nine games were won by the teams going "second first", with three going the other way and one drawn. The three teams that won by going "first first" were the Ox-fford, the Nags Head, and the Pack Horse Bowling Club.

The average team score for the Specialist questions was 56; the average total score was 154. This compares with an average score for the season of 54 in the Specialists and 136 in total. This season's previous highest average total score was 145 in Week 6.
