We apologise for the delay in posting these results. Mark Watson is still without an internet connection at home following a house move. This issue will hopefully be resolved in time for the next set of results to be posted promptly.
Of the nine games this week, five were won by teams going "first first" and three by the teams going the other way. We also had our first draw of the season!
The teams that won by going "first first" were the Dolphin, Church House Bollington, Waters Green Lemmings, Waters Green Rams and Park Taverners.
The draw was in the C League between the Cock Inn and Sutton Club, who also scored exactly the same scores in each of the Specialist and GK Rounds!
There were some other very close games, notably the one between the Church House Bollington and the Weaver, which the CHB won by two points. This was achieved by Ashton Davies getting a 3 for the very last question of the night – GK 96, the one about the "Merry Monarch".
Ashton had a fantastic score of 51 on the night, as did Bob Thompson for the Waters Green Rams.

The British Flag's questions scored well all round. The Specialist set were a lot easier than average and very well balanced (with a slight bias towards the team that went second); the General Knowledge were slightly harder than average but also well balanced. The bias in the General Knowledge was in favour of the team that went second (first in the Specialists) and so the overall balance was almost perfect.
The relative difficulty of the General Knowledge questions was reflected in their Entertainment score, which was still very respectable. The Entertainment score for the Specialist questions would have been the highest in the League last season.
All of this season's questions so far have scored well; as mentioned last week, the Sutton Mutton's total score of 17.45 would have won them a comfortable mid–table slot last season.

The first round of this season's Cup competition was played on Tuesday 24 Octomber (the week before the third round of League games). The results were as follows:
Sutton Mutton | 77 | 89 | Royal Oak |
Prince of Wales | 78 | 80 | Weaver |
Harrington 'B' | 73 | 74 | Park Taverners |
Robin Hood | 78 | 90 | Dolphin Dragons |
Wharfies | 91 | 83 | Plough Horntails |
Dolphin | 98 | 71 | Pack Horse Bowling Club |
Waters Green Rams | 70 | 73 | Cock Inn |
Church House Bollington | 86 | 70 | Sutton Club |
The eight losing teams from the above games will go into the Plate, whilst the eight winning teams are joined by the eight teams who had "byes", or set and asked questions, in Round 1, to make up the last 16 for the Cup.
The eight teams in the Plate have all played and lost one game, and two of those teams have been drawn to set questions for the next round, along with a further four teams to act as Question Masters for all the games.
All eight teams in the Plate will go forward to the Quarter Finals, which will be played early next year.
After Round 2 of the Cup, we will be left with eight teams in the Cup and eight in the Plate.
Top scorers in Round 1 were the Dolphin with 98.
I suspect most teams will have found the second half of the questions (nos. 61 to 120) a lot harder than the first. As the person who had the greatest hand in setting those questions, I feel I should explain that it was largely deliberate; in our house, we feel that the questions in the Cup need to be harder than we're used to in the League as they are all conferred. Some games seem to hang on just a handful of questions, which can make it seem like a bit of a lottery.
In the game that I asked the questions in (Robin Hood v. Dolphin Dragons), the scores were tied on 51 each at the half-way stage; in the second half, the Dragons scored 39 while the Robin Hood managed only 27. In the first half only five questions went unanswered by either team, but in the second half there were 22.
Maybe we overdid it and the questions were a little too tough. What do you think? Let me know, and I'll publish your replies (or a representative summary) in a future News & Views.

These games will be played on 21 November 2017. The questions will be set by the Plough Horntails and the Harrington 'B', who will provide two question masters each.
The Prince of Wales, Waters Green Rams, Sutton Mutton and Sutton Club will provide one question master each.
Please decide beforehand who is going to turn out, so we don’t have to call anyone on the night.
Questions for the Quarter Finals of the Cup and Plate will be set by two of the losing teams from the above games. A draw will be made after the above games have been played.
