News and Views: 1987–8 Season

Week 4: 27 October 1987

Once again there was a major shock in the ICI Quiz League results again involving the Millstone 'A'. This time however, they were at the hands of a one point defeat from the Millstone 'B'. There were generally high scores this week with the Lamb 'A' scoring 193 and Graham Bailey scoring 54.

There are still undefeated records for the Bears Head 'B' team in the B League which is an excellent start for a promoted team. Whether they will be able to keep that up when the ground gets more muddy only time will tell.

There were no major upsets in the D & E League Cup although there was a good win for the Butley Ash at the Beehive.

Week 14: 1 March 1988

There was a rare tie – between Robin Hood and Nags Head 'B', allowing Bears Head 'B' to go clear in the B League. Meanwhile, Lamb 'A' scraped through to keep ahead of Millstone 'A'.

Be prepared for close matches, acrimony and maybe even fisticuffs in the next league matches (15 March 1988) when the top two play each other in all five divisions!

Week 15: 15 March 1988

With their win over Gardeners QT, White Swan 'B' become the first champions of the season. Congratulations to them, one more match and they will have an unbeaten season. In other divisions, the wins by Millstone 'A' and Royal Oak reinforce their champions' aspirations.

There will be a committee meeting on the 29th March 1988 at the Old Millstone at 8:00 p.m. All Captains are requested to attend. There will be the draw for the Plate Semifinals.  We will also discuss the Finals night.

The Finals night will be held at the Haig Arms Hurdfield on Wednesday 20th April at 8:00 p.m. All three cup finals will take place together with the Presentations. Could all trophy holders get them back to the Old Millstone as soon as possible.

Week 16: 15 March 1988

More congratulations are due to the White Swan 'B' for finishing the season undefeated, a magnificent achievement. Praise is also due to both Millstone 'A' and Bears Head 'B' for winning their divisions with two weeks to spare. The champions of the E League was the Bulls Head with a points win over Macclesfield Cricket Club.

The C League is still undecided with the Royal Oak looking like favourites, but with a harder run–in than their rivals White Swan 'A'.

Week 18: 12 April 1988

The final match of the season brought the C League championship to the Royal Oak despite their loss to the Chestergate. They won on points over the runners–up, White Swan 'A'.

In the clash of the titans, Nick Dennis came out on top of Irene Graves and so retained the Individual Trophy.

Next season's AGM will be held during September, so watch the pages of the Express/Advertiser for advance publicity.
