Welcome to maccql.com

This website replaced the Macclesfield Quiz League blog in 2017. The blog had been operational since 2007.

Macclesfield is a market town in the English county of Cheshire, and its Quiz League has run without a break in the town's public houses on Tuesday nights through the winter since (at least) 1981. The League has been very kindly sponsored for many years by AstraZeneca under their excellent Community Relations programme.

Without the League's serene influence, several hundred people might have no idea which was the longest river wholly in England, how many bones there were in the human body, or who shot Gandhi. Some of us have been taking part for decades, and still don't know ...

On this website you can find the League fixtures, the latest results and tables, questions that have been asked since part–way through the 2016–17 season, and a partial historical archive of results and tables.

More information on the League is available on Nick's Quiz site, which has been a favourite with MQL participants (and indeed many non–participants) for many years. Nick's blog concentrates on the fortunes of one particular team, but also provides a forum for anyone who feels inclined to comment on matters related to MQL. It also holds the questions from several seasons up to and including 2016–17.

Macclesfield Quiz League is always keen to welcome new teams, and there are always teams on the lookout for new members. If you would like to take part, or if you have any other queries about the League, please contact markw@maccql.com.

If you have any comments on the contents of this website, not least regarding any errors that you may spot, please email haydn@maccql.com.

Quiz in the North

MQL's Ashton Davies is organising the next event in this series. It's in the Royal British Legion, Poynton, on Saturday 20 July – starting at 11:30 a.m.

Ashton is keen to recruit new contestants, as well as to welcome back existing ones. As is customary for these events, the day will start with an individual quiz and this will be followed by a team quiz – teams being selected according to placings in the individual quiz. This means that you may well find yourself teamed up with an Egghead, or a Chaser!

Click here for the QITN Facebook home page, here for details of Ashton's event, or here to register.

Mark Watson MBE

Forget Olivia Colman, Bear Grylls and ... Elvis Costello?!

Macclesfield Quiz League's very own Secretary and Lord High Everything Else – not to mention A League Individual Champion (for the tenth time) – has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours List, "for services to community policing".

You can read more about this richly deserved honour in a Special Edition of News and Views.

Hearty congratulations Mark – we are all very proud of you.

And in Other News ...

The 2018–19 Cup Final and Presentations Evening was held on Tuesday 9 April. The Cup Final resulted in a win for the Ox–fford 'C', by 109 points to the Weaver's 82. Full details (including photos!) are available from the 2018–19 menu at the top of of this page (and every other page on the website).

The usual end–of–season Information Packs (including the tables, details of the champions and runners–up in each league, and full individual tables) are also available from the 2018–19 menu. Printable versions of these pages are available.

To summarise the honours board for the 2018–19 season:

Winners Runners–Up Individual Champion
A League Ox–fford Ox–fford 'C' Mark Watson
B League British Flag Rushton Diamonds Dave Partington
C League Robin Hood Chester Road Tavern Jim Kennelly
Cup Ox–fford 'C' Weaver N/A

Cars & Vans 4U Question Setters' Trophy Winners: Ox–fford

Full details are of course available in all the usual places.

Congratulations to all of the above ... and also to the Harrington Academicals and Waters Green Lemmings, who will contest the Plate Final. This will be followed by the 2019 Annual General Meeting.

Watch this space for the Plate Final and AGM date, which will most likely be in late September (when we really should be back at school) ... and for archive updates! In the meantime, we wish all our readers an enjoyable summer.

The latest updates to the archive were made on Friday 14 June 2019.

All the historical information we have is now on the website – except for the results, and the Question Setters' Trophy details, for the 2015–16 season. I hope to have these online in the next week or so.

With the exception noted above, this information is complete from 1999 onwards. Prior to 1999 we have the final tables (League and Individual) for most years, and a varying number of results. We have at least some details for nearly all years as far back as 1982.

For details of what we have and what we don't have, please refer to the Archive Summary page. If you have anything from before 1999 that isn't on the website, please let me know!

Thanks to Andy Johnson, Robin Morrell, Tim Findlow and Alan Gilday, who have provided information so far.
